Welcome to the Blue Ridge High school and Middle School Art Room Website.
At any moment something amazing can happen. It could be a discovery, an experience, or an unexpected result. Art students at Blue Ridge High School are encouraged to explore, research, and experiment through unique processes, techniques, and exposure to situations that only art can offer. Within the challenges that students encounter as they begin an artistic journey, they utilize critical thinking skills, collaboration, self-expression, and ways to connect in a positive and empathetic way to others and the world around them. The art curriculum is beneficial for all types of learners and abilities. Students will be individually guided and encouraged, through one-on-one discussion with the teacher, to perform at their best, whatever that level may be. Blue Ridge art curriculum will utilize the ideas of Teaching for Artistic Behavior, and embrace the Pennsylvania State Art Standards and the National Core Art Standards.
Teaching for Artistic Behavior allows students freedom of exploration, originality, and choice when creating their artwork. Students in Art I through Portfolio Art, will utilize their sketchbooks and follow a protocol for each step of the lesson/project. First, they begin with sketching, brainstorming to get their ideas organized. Next, students create their work and when finished they will reflect on the process in a writing assignment called Loves and Lessons. Here, they celebrate positive things they discovered and identify challenges. Art I will focus on various media and the elements and principles of design while creating projects that are engaging and that encourages creativity and choice. Art II and III will follow a similar path, gradually becoming more choice based, so by the time a student reaches Portfolio Art, they are ready to put together a strong body of work. Cross curricular subjects, contemporary issues, as well as art history are infused wherever possible. 7th and 8th Grade Art will follow an art history timeline and create art work in various media related to a specific time period. Class critiques of finished work and other artists, will develop and strengthen critical thinking skills, encourage discussion, and honor different view-points. Student artwork will be uploaded by each student to the online art gallery, Artsonia.
Art education allows for students to experience the state wonderment at any age. It offers students to work through and within a process and to solve problems that have more than one answer. Communicating without words, art education can break language barriers. Students can work with traditional and non-traditional media in complex ways to gain experiences and revelations to further spark imagination, innovation and discovery. In more personal ways, it can be a tool for release, relaxation, building self-confidence, expression, and personal fulfillment. Through art education, a student will develop creative habits and may transfer these to other areas of learning to support an enriched life.
